Each hill has very different characteristics (apart from going up and down of course)! In 2016 there will be a slight amendment to the Box Hill leg. Instead of descending down Burford Slope, runners will be directed towards the pig track. The rest of the route remains the same.
Leg 1 - Box Hill
View route map here.
Box Hill comes first and is multi-terrain presenting a masive 270 steps from bottom to top. Runners will pass under the A24, turn left into (and over) the Stepping Stones and then up the steps with a short out and back to the viewpoint. (Remember to look!) The descent is via the rocky path of the pig track and a return to Denbies. The total distance is approximately 4.5 miles. This leg is guaranteed to be a lung busting ascent and very fast descent and is tough, tough, tough. The view from the top of Box Hill are amazing if you get the chance to look up.
Leg 2 - Norbury Park
View route map here.
Those who prefer more road will LOVE this route as a significant proportion is on tarmac or footpath. The climb up to Norbury Park is much kinder than the first leg, but blimey it does go on a bit. At just over 6 miles, this leg is perfect for those who prefer a little endurance to a flat out sprint. The downhill promises to be super speedy and is followed by a bonus hill before a flatish return to Denbies.
Leg 3 - Up to Ranmore Common
View route map here.
This legs is out and back along the North Downs Way up to Ranmore Common and apart from a short off road section is predominantly road. Probably the kindest of the hills and the shortest of the legs at 3.9 miles.
As England's largest vineyard Denbies Wine Estate has been producing award winning wines since 1986. It is the first wine estate in the world to give visitors of all ages a unique and fascinating insight into all aspects of the wine producing process, all year round, with indoor and outdoor tours and tasting.
The vineyards of Denbies Estate are situated on the North Downs with its famous chalky soil, in a protected valley of south facing slopes. A total 265 acres have been planted (three times the size of any other in the UK) and has met the promise of producing some of the finest sparkling and table wines in Europe.
The venue has secue baggage, toilets and changing facilities (sorry, no showers). Refreshments are available for purchase from the restaurant.
Health and Safety
There is no doubt this course is challenging. You need to be fit and well to start this race. Do not run if you feel unwell or have recently been unwell, even if you are raising money for charity.
Most medical emergencies during races occur in people who have been unwell but do not wish to miss the event. If you feel feverish, have been vomiting, have had severe diarrhoea or any chest pains, or otherwise feel unwell, then it is unfair to you, your family, your charity and the race support staff to risk serious illness and become a medical emergency. You are unlikely to do yourself justice and there are many other races that you will be able to compete in.
Please note, in the interest of safety, MP3 players and similar devices using headphones are not allowed. You will be disqualified if you are seen to use them. Our insurance covers you for public liability only. Please be aware you are responsible for your own personal injury insurance cover.
Getting There and Parking
The HQ is situated just off the A24 London Road, Dorking and is close to Junction 9 of the M25. The closest railway stations are Boxhill & Westhumble and Dorking stations which have very good rail links from London Victoria, London Waterloo, Horsham and Guildford. We strongly suggest you come by public transport of you can. Remember to factor in walking time from the train station to the Race HQ. We would estimate a good 15 minute walk depending on which you use.
The race start and finish and changeover points are outside the main building in the Denbies Estate.
Sussex Sport photography will be on hand to take race photographs for purchase afterwards.
Withdrawals, Transfers and Cancellations
From the moment we begin to organise an event, we start to incur costs. Your entry fee is invested into the cost of staging the event - everythingn from the start and finish venue to printing, safety pins, race numbers, marketing and VAT. Organising any event requires a considerable amount of forward planning, risk and expense. For this reason, we are not able to refund or transfer your entry to another event.
However, in the event you are not able to run, if you can find a replacement, we can transfer your place to them. Please contact Nicky at firstname.lastname@example.org with the full details of your replacement. Please include full name, gender, club, e-mail address, postal address and telephone number plus details of the 'in case of emergency' contact in your e-mail.
The deadline for any changes is two weeks before the event. Most race directors will charge an administration fee for this service, we do not. Please do not run with someone elses number, you will not be covered under our insurance and in the event of you becoming unwell out on the course, we will not have any contact details for you or your family. If you are found to be running with incorrect details, you will be disqualified.
If the event cannot go ahead for any reason we will endeavour to contact you by e-mail. We will also post updates on the blog page of our site and through our facebook and twitter accounts. Runners will be given the option of transferring their entry to the revised date (if rescheduled) or another event specified. Because of the huge costs incurred by this event prior to it taking place, no refunds will be offered under any circumstances.
